Equity Literacy and Anti-Racism  The 20/21 school year is opening in the wake of an intense and emotional summer. One that has made systemic racism more clear and has amplified the urgent requirement for schools and educators to focus on anti-racism, equity and justice. So then, how can our schools (in policy, procedures and outcomes) demonstrate alignment with the belief, values and fundamental truth that Black lives matter? For that matter… what is Black Lives Matter (BLM)? An organization? A movement? A belief? If it’s a movement, what is schools’ role in the movement?

The OVUU board, along with BUU and RNESU members, will engage in an important conversation about BLM, systemic racism and systemic anti-racism. We know that conversations are not enough and the resulting learning, stated beliefs and values are measured by actions. As such, our conversation must also include identifying actions the board can take to advance anti-racism in RNESU.
