THE MYSTERY OF SNOW DAYS
As we enter the season of snow days and school closures, I would like to give some background on how school closure decisions are made. No one, even me, has a crystal ball. But there is data that can be used to help make the decision. The decision to call schools is a difficult one because of the impact on students and families. Rutland Northeast closes only for extreme weather conditions or other safety emergencies.
Using the NOAA.gov website for weather conditions, we start tracking storms in advance as soon as we become aware of them. Starting the night before through the morning of a storm,I am tracking the weather and am in communication with the transportation coordinator. The transportation coordinator is in communication with the road crews in our towns and also is tracking road conditions. By 5 am at the latest, we are comparing notes and every attempt is made to make a decision by 6am. Staff who leave home early should wait on inclement weather days until at least 6am to be sure school is open.
Conditions that may lead to closure include conditions that affect the ability of buses and cars to navigate roads and safely deliver students throughout the region for school. Families are urged, if schools are open, to travel safely and make decisions that affect their family needs. Parents have the ultimate right to keep a child home if they believe it is not safe for the child to travel to school.
School closings will be communicated through our Connect 5 Alert System phone calls and through local area radio and TV stations.
Days missed due to school closings must be made up, generally at the end of the school year. In March or April, the calendar is revisited to accommodate missed school days.
Let us hope for a mild season and clear decisions for safety!
